"A modern fairy tale, a film avowedly for children, but one from which, as with all Miyazaki's films, adults can and should learn. Miyazaki's entire poetics are encapsulated here: there's love for the environment, for children, and a longing for a past in which society was more polite and kind toward others. What is surprising, but not overly so, about the film is its innate freshness. An indispensable work, graced, for once, by a commendable Italian adaptation." (Andrea Chirichelli)
