The Gold Rush by Charlie Chaplin
The Gold Rush by Charlie Chaplin

A little man, a solitary gold prospector, braves the risks and dangers of the frigid Klondike to find riches. He first encounters the fearsome Black Larsen, then forms a bond with the rugged Giacomone, whom he accidentally encounters while seeking shelter in a wooden shack. The two must try to survive together against hunger and cold. When the little man travels to a nearby town, he finds love.

Newly restored in 4K for its 100th anniversary, "The Gold Rush" remains a masterpiece of absolute comedy and a great tale of loneliness. It's the film Chaplin would have liked to be remembered for. The choice to take the Tramp to the roots (or the precipice) of American mythology, to frame his solitary figure against the snowy backdrop of the birth of a nation, makes it a work of unsurpassed, dizzying intensity.
