"Bugonia is yet another emanation of an inevitably and programmatically "current" cinema, which presents itself as a nonfiction operating room of post-human and post-ideological content, made up of automated characters whose pain is already a distant echo, something lost in the off-screen and given way to the obsessive persistence of self-annihilation and the comical finale. Like it or not, Lanthimos deserves credit for resetting everything and pushing the chronic didacticism of his paroxysmal pamphlets to the point of no return of a melancholic ballad destined to fade away. Yet more than a true game over, Bugonia is a sad stand-by that looks towards the Apocalypse, allowing itself the luxury—for Lanthimos, surely!—of a frozen tear, which perhaps sooner or later will fall to soften the filmmaker's puppet-like cinema.
