Noi due cineasti. The Cinema of Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi

Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi
Noi due cineasti. The Cinema of Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi

On the occasion of the exhibition La marcia dell’uomo by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi at Centro Pecci, this special film series explores the deeply poetic and politically engaged work of two of the most important voices in experimental and archival cinema.

Through a personal and evocative visual language, their films reflect on the violence of the 20th century—colonialism, war, exile, and migration. The program unfolds in three screenings from May to September and includes some of their most powerful and intimate works: from personal film diaries to the renowned War Trilogy, culminating in the recent Frente a Guernica.

Saturday, May 31, from 4:00 PM

I diari di Angela / Noi due cineasti vol. 1 (2018), 125’
I diari di Angela / Noi due cineasti vol. 2 (2019), 100’

I diari di Angela / Noi due cineasti is a moving tribute created by Gianikian after the death of Ricci Lucchi, using her illustrated diaries and film or personal video reports that recorded the couple’s daily life and travels.

Thursday, June 12, from 4:00 PM

Prigionieri della guerra (1995), 67’
Su tutte le vette è pace (1999), 72’
Oh! Uomo (2004), 71’

These three films form the so-called Trilogia della guerra: a three-part account of the drama of World War I, through the archives of the countries involved in the conflict, culminating in the portrayal of the “new man” of the postwar era, ready to face the experience of totalitarian regimes.

Sunday, September 14, from 6:00 PM

Frente a Guernica (2023), 126’

Born from a close encounter with Picasso’s masterpiece Guernica at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, where Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi visited in 2014, this project spans a decade and explores the Spanish Civil War and episodes of European history that contributed to the outbreak of that conflict.
