The fifth meeting of the prologue to the inaugural exhibition The End of the World, launched one month before the Grand Opening. An important framework of collaborations which presents some emblematic works from the collection in prestigious institutional centres of the region.

On Saturday the 8th of October 2016 at 11 a.m., Daniel Spoerri’s work Figure humaine comparée avec celle de la chévre et brebis [Human figure compared with that of the goat and sheep] (1995) will be on display at the Museum and Florentine Institute of Prehistory “P.Graziosi”. The work comes from the series Carnaval des Animaux [Carnival of the Animals], and was donated by the artists to the Pecci Centre on the occasion of its retrospective exhibition in Prato in 2007.

The place
The Museum and Florentine Institute of Prehistory "Paolo Graziosi", located in the historic convent of the Oblate in Florence, was established in 1946 by the famous palaeoethnologist with a group personalities of Florentine culture, to create a centre in which to collect, classify and preserve the prehistoric collections of various sources existing in Florence. The collections of the Museum has been accessible to the public since 1975 through the inclusion of educational equipment and the creation of new exhibition areas.
The museum contains documents dating back to the early Stone Age all the way up to Metal Ages, which come from excavations and research carried out in Italy, Europe and Africa, largely under the aegis of the Museum itself. Alongside the collections on public display are large collections of palaeoethnological and palaeontological materials conserved in the museum’s storage. The exhibition consists two large rooms, one for introductory teaching and the other for the display of the collections.

Prologue - The End of the World

A selection of exemplary works of contemporary art from the collection of the Pecci Centre in Prato serves as an introduction and "frame" for The End of the World exhibition, curated by the director Fabio Cavallucci for the reopening to the public of the renovated cultural institution in Prato.

Collected over three decades of artistic activity, their presentation is curated by the conservator of the Centre Stefano Pezzato, the works are on display for the occasion in some of the most prestigious institutional centres in the region.

The six major works coming from the Centro Pecci collection - works by renowned Italian and foreign artists of the second half of the twentieth century - form a diverse yet eloquent sampling of contemporary artistic proposals related to the central theme of the "state of uncertainty which prevails in our world", and are inserted and therefore related to different contexts of human knowledge such as literature review and scientific research, in particular pre-history, zoology, astronomy, physics, geometry and technology.
